Q/A: How Can I Tell The Difference Between My Own Thoughts vs. Projections?
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;…” 2 Cor. 5:10
You should reject any negative thoughts whether you think they are coming from within or outside. He said to cast down every vain imagination or high thing/thoughts…so it doesn’t matter where it’s coming from. If you are joined with Christ and one with God, such negative or evil thoughts should not be claimed by you anyway, so cast everything down.
Where it is coming from doesn’t matter … although it is often very clear. For example, if you know you are dealing with pride and then you have prideful thoughts, it’s clearly something that is coming or is seating in your mind. That obviously does not mean that every single prideful thought is coming from your mind, but you can often tell when it’s coming from your mind or it is something that was projected at you.
On the other hand, there are, obviously, some vain evil thoughts that cannot possibly be coming from you. Most of them are things you can’t even imagine is coming from you. When you think such thoughts you can even ask yourself how in the world or why in the world you are thinking about such things? Most common projections are sexually related, vile, guile, etc.
In the end though, it doesn’t matter where they come from…however they come, cast them down and reject them, they are not yours.
